About the trip and myself…

So a bit about me…

I am 27 years old, at least when I started the trip. From Brisbane (aka Brisvegas, Brisneyland, Brissie) in Australia. After finishing up an Economics degree I went to live in Dublin, Ireland where I stayed for about 2 years. I didn’t have a car at the time and whilst I could afford a bike I didn’t have the license. The freedom it would have given me to explore Ireland on weekends would have made life there even better so when I got back to Australia I set about getting it. That was over 3 years ago now and I have been riding since then and have a fair few long distance trips around the Australian east coast under my belt.

Dad and I on a 2 week ride through the Snowy Mountains.

This year I decided that if I was going to do a significant round-the-world trip on a motorbike in my life, along with all the other things I want to do, then it would have to happen now. Since I got back to Australia I had been working as a chemical trader and had enough money saved away to fund it. Sold the car, the bike and put all my worldly possessions into storage and hit the road.

One other thing I have always wanted to do was the Trans-siberian railroad and to train in Martial Arts in China. So I am ticking those two off the list before I make it to London where I will buy the bike. I have also been studying Spanish for a few years so am really keen to spend a fair bit of time in Spain and South America and get it polished and put to use.

The planned route

The plan: I am already in Europe after 3 months going through Asia and Russia. I have a motorbike now and will ride around Europe for the next 12 months. I want to see both East and Western Europe. Then it is over to South America, if I can I would really like to sail the Trans Atlantic from Gibraltar to the Caribbean – If I can swing it. After exploring most of South America I am going to head up to Central and North America.

Cheers Dan, yeah it was pretty grueling in China but I was pretty fit at the time. Another 4 months on the road has seen that diminish a bit, but that’s the nature of it. Hard to keep fit on the road. Will follow your stuff with interest, when I have a family in a few years I hope to be doing similar travels in the same style. If you make it as far as Australia on your great expedition I would be glad to give you tips. Camping is generally cheaper in Australia than in Europe, especially if you go in the lower seasons, Spring/Winter/Autumn, you would find that our Winter would be quite mild compared to Europe i.e. up north most days are in the region of 20 degrees.
